Standing Committees:

 

Membership

 

This committee will seek, recruit, and maintain members in the organization. We currently have a membership of about 100 organizations and individuals.

Membership categories:

   Students Fee: $10/year

   Individuals and Families Fee: $15/year

   Professionals Fee: $25/year

   Organizations Fee: $50/year (up to 5 members may be listed as members)

 

Youth

 

This committee brings together youth in Sarasota that wants to participate in the research and writing of the articles for our monthly Bilingual Newsletters. Students participating engage in opportunities of reading and writingh in both English and Spanish. Mastery of either language is not required. Community service hours for high school level are awarded. 

 

Education in English

 

This committee will research the needs of the Latino community for Education in English and organize appropriate trainings and classes. 

 

Families Learning Together Program - Programa de Familias Aprendiendo Juntas

This program started as a pilot program from January to May, 2007 Pilot Project at Emma E. Booker Elementary School.

About 30 students enroll in the learning of English as a Second Language for a total of a 13 week session. These students are parents of students

enrolled at Booker and qualify for this service provided that they bring their kids during those 13 sessions for them to better develop their skills with

teachers from the school. In summer 2008, a convenient location was secured at the Honore Goodwill on 17th Street and Honore Ave in the Community Classroom.

 

Families previously enrolled from Emma E. Booker Elementary and Tuttle Elementary have been participating for over a year.

 

Education In Spanish 

 

This committee will research the needs of the community for practice and learning of Spanish language and culture.  

 

 

Special Events 

 

This committee will research and organize special events opportunities that will promote the Latino culture in the community. This committee will also look for and promote events that will help the Latino community connect with other cultures in Sarasota.

 

   October - Latino Fiesta Sarasota during Hispanic Heritage Month at Selby Five Points Park

 

   December - Luncheon at Authentic Latino Restaurants to share Holiday traditions
